Our Family

Our family has lived in Monument Valley for many generations, and have witnessed many changes over the century. Tourism is one of the largest changes to come to the area and one of the largest forms of income for the local population living in Monument Valley.

In the early 1900s, A local trader named Harry Goulding, introduced Monument Valley to Hollywood director John Ford. Mr. Ford made Monument Valley an iconic backdrop for most of his western films. This exposure in the movies of Monument Valley opened the new market to tourism.

Our great grandparents, Willie and Happy Cly, were one of the many local Navajo pioneers that started to cater their services to the new form of income brought to the area. Taking in visitors to their home to show them how they lived and survived in the local area, also introducing points of interest to many photographers and artists during that time.

Today many tourists from all over the world come to Monument Valley to see in person, to see and experience what they have seen in the media for themselves. Many live in the busy day to day life and few get to visit new areas, these few make the Southwest a rare journey; to record, experience and include Monument Valley into their travels.

Our Navajo guides will share our part of our world to you, and perhaps we will learn a little about yours. We welcome you to visit a part of the, “wild west” here in Monument Valley!
